Computer question re pdf file

Normally when I open a book using adobe for a pdf file it gives me the option of Ctrl F in finding key words in the document. I have however a pdf file of a 529 page book in which I need to find key words. When I press Ctrl F and look for a word I know is in the document , it says finished search and that word is not there.
Two questions . (1 ) Why is this and (2) what can I do to maybe change the document to allow me use Ctrl F
One thing that may be important, books I use are normally 5-20 Mbs but this one seems large in that it is 320 Mbs. Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Iron Duke has nailed it.
The size of the document gives you the clue - you have an image i.e. a scanned copy. It's like asking Adobe Reader to find a word in a photocopy of something.
You'd have to OCR the document first for the search to work, using a program like Abbyy FineReader.

the text you see could be part of an image imbedded in the pdf so when the scan function is ran it doesn't actually find any text... just loads of images so won't find words

Has the file got lots of graphics/drawings/pictures embedded?
If so there's an option (somewhere) to "optimize" these (i.e reduce their size); that also reduces their quality, so if you're going to try that, try it on a copy of your document.
Try "File" -> "Save as Other". There may be an option there but I'm not sure because I've never actually had to do this.

Cheers ID and Mike , no it was not converted from word to pdf, Mike, I did that and it worked up to a point it started searching the page using the small window that scans through the pages , though it did not find the key words but i think I stumbled on the reason by accident on the preferences page "search" where it says "purge cache contents" beside that it says maximum cache size 100 Mbs ! is there a way of reducing the file size from 320 to

Is the document a scanned copy or was it saved to pdf from word?

Navigate to Adobe Reader's Preferences.
Disable the "Enable Fast Find".
Click on "Purge cache Contents"
Click OK.
Close Adobe Reader.
Try again.
